African Union
The African Union works to advance political and socioeconomic integration, defend Africa’s independence as a continent and achieve greater unity among countries. Unfortunately, between 2021 and 2023 six countries have been suspended, with instability only on the rise. Civil war breaks out in Sudan, and militaries depose governments in Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso. Will these problems be resolved so the African Union can continue with its primary goals of uniting the countries, maintaining sovereignty and advancing political and socioeconomic integration or will the African Union fall?
Gulf War (UNSC)
On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait for control over their oil fields, igniting a global crisis that compelled the UN to confront this violation of international peace with a military response. Delegates will first discuss Operation Desert Shield, the prelude to the invasion, debating on the enforcement of sanctions on Iraq, the mounting threat of conflict escalation and the increase of coalition forces to defend the region. Once Iraq refuses to withdraw, delegates will then move on to Operation Desert Storm, the coalition response to force Iraq’s compliance. Members of the committee will focus on the balance between international law and the ethics of intervention, the urgent need for the protection of civilians, planning post-conflict recovery and the potential UN sanctions to be placed on Iraq for its hostile invasion.
