On August 2, 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait for control over their oil fields, igniting a global crisis that compelled the UN to confront this violation of international peace with a military response. Delegates will first discuss Operation Desert Shield, the prelude to the invasion, debating on the enforcement of sanctions on Iraq, the mounting threat of conflict escalation and the increase of coalition forces to defend the region. Once Iraq refuses to withdraw, delegates will then move on to Operation Desert Storm, the coalition response to force Iraq’s compliance. Members of the committee will focus on the balance between international law and the ethics of intervention, the urgent need for the protection of civilians, planning post-conflict recovery and the potential UN sanctions to be placed on Iraq for its hostile invasion.
